Employment Overview
Cork’s jobs market is one of the healthiest in Europe. As well as thousands of well-established indigenous companies prospering as a result of the economic boom here, Cork is home to dozens of major international companies such as Apple Computers, Boston Scientific, GlaxoSmithKline, Amazon, Pfizer, Siemens, EMC, and Black & Decker – to name but a few.
Such employers have been attracted to the region by the high standard of education in Cork’s schools and colleges and by the fact that the population is English speaking –Ireland is the only country in the Eurozone that has English as its first language.
Many people working in Cork come from outside the region and a high percentage of students studying here at third level come from overseas.
If you plan to study in Cork or if you’d like your children to attend school here, you’ll find that Cork has some of the finest education establishments in the country. Primary and Secondary schools across the city and county have an enviable track record of academic achievement and are also renowned for their emphasis on fostering well-rounded individuals with good interpersonal skills and a strong sense of community.
Cork’s third-level colleges are second to none. University College Cork (UCC) produces the country’s brightest graduates, with more students achieving a first-class degree or a 2:1 in their finals than any other Irish university. Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) places special emphasis on applied research – a policy that has attracted support for its research programmes from all over Ireland and Europe.
