Employment
There’s no shortage of jobs in Cork and demand is continuing to boom, particularly in the ICT and pharmachem sectors.
In 2007, job creation rates grew at 5% –higher than the national average – and permanent salaries in Cork increased by an average of 8%, while salaries in the local contract market were up 15%.
Last year was a busy one when it came to new jobs announcements – Amazon created a new multilingual customer service centre in Cork Airport Business Park; financial services firm Citco created a new Cork-based data processing centre at Tellengana House on Blackrock Road; EMC-owned VMware established an EMEA technical support centre in Cork and construction firm, Parsons announced expansion plans.
A quick look at 2008 so far shows no letup in the ongoing search for highly educated, well-qualified staff – which Cork produces in abundance.
In February, Citco Fund Services announced that it would further expand its Cork City hedge fund administration operation over the next three years. Great news for business and accounting graduates as well as employees with a high level of computer literacy and good communication skills.
In May, Pfizer – the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, and one of Cork’s longest-established employers – announced that it planned to invest €190 million in a new biologics facility.
And Cork’s smaller companies are also thriving and on the lookout for new staff. Eight cutting-edge SMEs based in Cork city and county announced plans in the software, healthcare, engineering, medical devices and food sectors.
