Training
There are a number of further education and training colleges for second-level school leavers. The Cork County VEC (Vocational Education Committee), administers four such colleges in Cork County:
- Clonakilty College of Further Education
- Kinsale College of Further Education

and the City of Cork VEC (Vocational Education Committee), administers three colleges in Cork city:
- Cork College of Commerce on Morrisons Island
- Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa on Tramore Road
- St John’s Central College on Sawmill St, Cork
Each of these offers a range of full- and part-time courses in a variety of vocational and technological subjects aimed at enhancing students’ readiness for the workplace. Courses on offer include
- secretarial and office administration
- computers and IT
- business
- travel, tourism and languages
- media
- performing arts
- fashion and design
- horticulture
- health studies and childcare
FÁS, the national recruitment and training authority, is based in Bishopstown. It is the largest and best-equipped training centre in Europe. FÁS courses are aimed at those already in employment as well as at jobseekers and many of the courses are free.
If you’d like to brush up on your English language skills, classes are available right across the city, with some schools offering free courses at introductory level
