Marshalled Taxi Rank

The Marshalled Taxi Rank, managed by Cork Marketing Partnership as part of its Cork City Cares night time economy project, supplies two security personnel on St. Patrick Street (outside Brown Thomas). The marshals help maintain an orderly queue of customers seeking taxis for their homeward journey on a Friday and Saturday night between midnight and 3.00 a.m.. The marshals will also alert Taxi Companies of waiting customers.

Public surveys demonstrated a widely held view that there is no public transport available from the City Centre after midnight,  the Cork Marshalled Taxi Rank on Patrick Street offers the city a public transport focus, with the support of Cork Taxi drivers. The latenight city centre taxi rank is monitored by CCTV and An Garda Síochána, liaising with the marshals, to monitor the rank.

"Late night public transport is a vital part of the management mix of the Cork night-time environment, Cork City Council is pleased to play its part in supporting a Marshalled Taxi Rank as part of it's transportation policy" said Joe Gavin, Cork City Manager.

Marshalled Taxi Ranks, as well as proving successful with customers here in Cork are a tried and proven facility in towns and cities across the UK and Europe.   News of the Marshalled Taxi Rank in Cork has brought phone enquiries to Cork Marketing Partnership from Dublin, Galway, Waterford and Kilkenny, who are monitoring the impact and success of the facility with a view to duplicating the service in other Irish cities.

Chairman of Cork Marketing Partnership Mr. Michael Geary commented "Night-time activity is an important leisure amenity for Cork citizens and visitors and the effective management of the night-time environment is critical to the success of the night-time economy of the region".

The launch of the Cork Marshalled Taxi Rank follows on the success of a Pilot Scheme that ran during the Christmas/New Year season that saw over 400 passengers per night use the service.
