Religion

Catholicism is the majority faith in Cork – as it is in most parts of The Republic of Ireland, with over 85% of the population at least nominally Catholic.

Visitors moving here from abroad have also brought their own faith, culture and religious traditions, giving us a community here in Cork that is truly multicultural.

Religious discrimination is forbidden by law and this is stated in the Irish Constitution. There are places of worship for almost all major religions in the Cork Metropolitan area:

Catholic Church – There are churches throughout every community in Cork city and county and the Cork and Ross diocesan headquarters is at Redemption Road.

Church of Ireland – This is the second-largest religious group in Cork, and there are numerous Church of Ireland churches throughout the city and county. Their diocesan office is a 14 Cove Street.

Cork Muslim Society – The society can be contacted at 69 Riverview Estate in Glasheen and Cork’s mosque is in the Heinz Haupt Health Centre on Vicar’s Road in Togher.

Baptist Church – The Baptists can be found on MacCurtain Street in the city centre.

Cork Hebrew Society – Cork’s small Jewish community has a Synagogue at 10 South Terrace.

Cork Christian Orthodox Community – The Greek Orthodox Community of Saint Nicholas is based at 1 Sydenham Terrace in Monkstown.

Jehovah’s Witnesses – The Cork Central Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses is at The Kingdom Hall on Hibernian Road in the city. There are also congregations in Carrigaline, Cobh, Bandon, Skibbereen and Milstreet in the county.

Presbyterian Church – The Trinity Presbyterian Church is on Little William Street (off York Street).

Methodist Church – The Methodists are at Ardfallon on Douglas Road.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons) – This community is based on Sarsfield Road in Wilton.

Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) – The Quakers can be found at their meeting room on Summerhill South.

The Cork region has a small Hindu community of about 300 members. As yet, there is no Hindu Temple here, but contact can be made with other Hindus through the Vinayaka temple in Dublin or the Ireland Hindu Cultural Centre in Clane, County Kildare, email or phone 086-8881905.

There are a number of small Buddhist centres in Cork city and county. Cork Zen Dojo has an address at 19 North Main Street in the city, and the Kagyu Samye Dzong Buddhist Centre is at 2 Lower Janemount in Sunday's Well, 021 394117. In Cork county, Dzogchen Beara & Rigpa Ireland is based at Garranes in Allihies, West Cork, email or phone 027 73032.
